Thereafter Monet concentrated on the production of the famous series showing a single subject in different lighting conditions, including poplars, haystacks, Rouen Cathedral, and his own garden at Giverny. The movement was named after Louis Leroy, who used the title of Claude Monet’s work Impression, Sunrise (1873) in his scathing criticism of the inaugural Impressionist exhibition in 1874. A period of travel followed in the 1880s, and in 1883 he acquired a property at Giverny, north-west of Paris. In the early 1870s Monet lived mainly at Argenteuil but made frequent trips to his home town, Le Havre, on the Normandy coast.
